New Web Site Coming Soon!
September 2012
Seven years ago, volunteer Kevin McDonald built a web site for the Jacobsburg Historical
Society and began serving as web master. In that time, technology has changed greatly.
The Society will be launching an expanded web site in late 2012/early 2013.
Funding for this project is being generously provided by Northampton County.
Thank you for your patience during the transition!
Call the Society office at 610-769-9029 with any questions.
In the meantime, check us out on Facebook!

Christmas at Boulton a
phenomenal success!
December 12, 2011
What a wonderful weekend! Over 500 visitors helped celebrate "Christmas at Boulton" this past
Saturday, December 10, 2012. A wonderful article on the front page of the Local Sections of the Express Times
(available online) spread the word about our annual open house. The Patch gave us a great follow-up
article. See
pictures on our Facebook Page.

In Loving Memory

William Henry Atherton
September 2, 2011
William Henry Atherton, resident of Nazareth, PA, died on Tuesday,
August 30th, after a brief illness. Atherton was a direct descendant
of William Henry, a Pennsylvania gunsmith whose descendants built
the Boulton Gun works. Atherton was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
in 1929 and grew up in Forty Fort, Pennsylvania. He graduated from
Lawrenceville. Atherton received his degree from General Motors
Institute of Technology. Atherton joined the Marines and remained
a dedicated corpsman throughout his life. Atherton enjoyed a lengthy
career in the aerospace industry as a marketing executive. He had
many interests; chief among them was his love of flying. He was
an avid glider pilot for many years.
In 1985 Atherton moved to the Henry ancestral home at Boulton. A
Henry descendant, Atherton worked tirelessly to see that the contributions
of the Henry family and its legacy continue to be recognized. In
2009 the bridge that spans the Bushkill Creek was dedicated and
renamed the William Henry Atherton Bridge. Atherton was a board
member of Jacobsburg Historical Society and remained active with
Boulton up until his death. Atherton loved animals; he had two beloved
cats and enjoyed feeding the local horses as well as other cats
who resided in the Henry barn.
Atherton was preceded in death by his sister Mary Atherton Frantz
and his brother Charles Henry Atherton. He is survived by nieces
Melanie Harwood and Sarah Atherton, both of Maryland, nephews Richard
Frantz of Maine, Charles Henry Atherton, Jr. of New York City, and
Thomas Henry Atherton, of North Carolina.
A memorial service will take place at Schoeneck Moravian Church
in Nazareth on Wednesday, September 7th, at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:

PO Box 345 Nazareth, PA 18064.

Historic Interpreter
Tom Varenchick Dies at Age 61
May 2, 2011
We are very saddened to report that Jacobsburg Historical Society
member and volunteer Tom Varenchick died on Friday, April 22, at
the age of 61. For the last few years, Tom has been the face of
the Boulton Historic site to many visitors and friends. Whether
in his role as a docent in the Pennsylvania Longrifle Museum or
while serving as a spokeman for the organization at local fairs
and history events, Tom greeted everyone with a smile and shared
his passion for history with students of all ages.
Gifts made to the Jacobsburg Historical Society in Tom's memory
will be used for two purposes: an Education Box and a bench. The
Education Box will contain historic artifacts and replicas and allow
children of all ages to "please touch" a piece of history. Hands-on
education was Tom's favorite way to share his knowledge and the
kit will contain many of the items Tom owned and used.
Tom also loved the physical campus at the Boulton Historic Site.
He would often come early to work in order to sit and "just be."
A bench in Tom's memory seems most fitting. Memorial checks should
be made out to The Jacobsburg Historical Society and mailed to:
JHS
PO Box 345
Nazareth PA 18064.
