Open Hearth Cooking Classes

College Kitchen ~ May 31, 2009, 1pm to 4pm. Celebrate your return home from college and a summer break from Ramen noodles by learning to make some seriously tasty apple fritters and other treats the really old fashioned way – on an open hearth. Class instructed by Sarah White, history student at Moravian College and long-time summer kitchen volunteer at Jacobsburg Historical Society.

Class fee: $20. Limited to 8 participants.

Open Hearth Basics ~ June 28, 2009, 10am to 3:30pm. Learn how to cook on the fireplace. Class will focus on fryng, boiling, baking and roasting techniques of the early American period. Class instructed by Connie Unangst, member of the Historic Foodways Group of the Delaware Valley and long-time cook at the John Joseph Henry House.
Class fee: $40. Limited to 8 participants.

Syllabubs ~ July 26, 2009, Noon to 2:30pm. Learn how to make the delicious drinkable dairy dessert from the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries using period recipes. Class instructed by Connie Unangst, member of the Historic Foodways group of the Delaware Valley and long-time cook at the John Joseph Henry House.

Class fee: $15. Limited to 12 participants. Must be 21 or older to register.

Herbs: Beyond Potpourri and Seasonings ~ August 30, 2009, 11am to 3pm. Come explore some not so traditional uses of herbs from 19th century recipes, including concoctions, crumpets, and infusions. Includes a tour of the John Joseph Henry House Herb Garden. Class instructed by Sally Shutler, open hearth cooking specialist and living history interpreter for Shippen Manor Museum in Oxford, NJ.

Class fee: $30. Limited to 12 participants. Must be 21 or older to register.

Roots & Shoots ~ September 27, 2009, 11am to 3pm. Roasted or mashed, in a pot or in a pan, we’ll prepare both. This open hearth cooking class will explore various techniques for preparing root vegetables. Class instructed by Sally Shutler, open hearth cooking specialist and living history interpreter for Shippen Manor Museum in Oxford, NJ.

Class fee: $30. Limited to 12 participants.
